PCD + Top Model

This week I was not able to catch a full episode of Top Model however since Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll aired right after it, I was able to catch the end of that. I found it quite interesting that this week both girls from "Detroit," Michigan got voted off, not to mention that the two show are by the same producer.

To the point of what I think about these two show which consist of (well) female competing for one title. Although I think these two shows are interesting, I think the moral of it is extremely bad for female. Would you show the whole world you "almost" nude body just to win? If you win Top Model will you be doing anything great? Apart from seeing your face in Cover Girls' cf right after the show goes on break. I have not yet seen any Top Model winner in Cover Girls' ads expect for Eva! PCD Present is different since you will be added onto a (somewhat) popular group. People will get to see you face, however not all the time. It's not like people will recognize your face like Nicole (who's always in front of the camera and lead singer). I mean if you can win as the next dolls then could you not make it big on your own? If you can sing and dance, why not become a solo artist instead of having to bend in as backup for a group just because they need to have an odd number (so that their lead singer can pop out even more)?

I think these two show are entertaining to watch, however I feel bad for the girls that are searching for their dreams in there. What if you do not win? What if you make a fool of yourself? I for one prefer to be in from of the TV screen instead of in it.

Class and Virtue

I do not believe people actually really think about what kind of class a person have in a movie, they really just go to watch it and that will be the end of that. Many people probably do notice the virtues which define a good guy from a bad one, but its a common thing so no one really think about it when though they sees it.

I think that in movies, I think it really depends on who the people is about that states the class. Unlike what the essay mention, it is not always the upper or higher-middle class that are always the hero and the bad guys are always the lower bottom classes. Take Land of the Dead, the story takes a different turn. The multi-millionaire (high upper class) Mr. "K" is the villain. I do agree that most movies are basic on middle class because they are usually always the viewer, since they actually have the money and the time to watch them.

Anyone can point out the hero/heroine of a movie by their virtue if they know what the film is about. Take for example if it is a about a character who grew up in a class struggling family, you will define her bad living which will make her a heroine. When you know that the upper class who is against her, you will define the high class standard living as being traits of the villain(s).

Class and virtue of a main character depends on what the plot or storyline of the movie.

America's Next Top Model C.8

So after everyone came out and told Renee about her attitude, she tries to change. She acts tons nicer and tries to apologize for all that she have done. Apart from trying to change herself she also won the challenge of the week. It was funny how they were fool that their prize was just a simple t-shirt that says "I vote for Renee."

The true prize of the challenge was to get your family to visit. This happens every year, so it is really nothing new, however one of the girls ended up crying. I can not remember her name, but she was the girl that was from Russia(?). The surprising thing since I did not watch all season of the last few Top Model was that this season three of the girls has a child! I really do not know what this is trying to point at since most other reality shows have girls who have a child or two, such as American Idol, but I guess these shows could show how girls are trying to improve their living life. Since the reason for most of them for coming onto such a TV program was to make a better life for their children, though I really do not know how they can that if when they win the title they would get extremely busy and never have time for their child.

This week photograph have model from last season as guests. I thought it was interesting how they were using Top Model's most remembered moment or something like that as the photo shoot and they were suppose to be selling Payless shoes. One really interesting thing that I do notice now is that whenever they say Payless they zooms right to the shoes to sort of "wow" your eyes. Anyway, the girls were suppose to portray those model moments and it turn out pretty great. One of the girl did not want to do a lesbian shoot because she says she was not comfortable but ended up enjoying it? Now there must be something wrong with that? Not saying that there is anything wrong with being a lesbian.

This week, FINALLY, Whitney got voted off! She really pretty but her picture are pretty annoying. I really did not like how she always act so "prefect." She's a beautiful girl, but model was not fit for her. Thank goodness they finally realize she had to go after being on the bottom three three (or was it four) times! Jael was also the other bottom. The judges says that she really needs to learn how to talk, because being a model is being able to talk and sell products. True, but give the girl a break, she got paralyze!

Holy Homosexuality Batman

The reading was pretty confusing, however after discussion in class it seems like everyone think the author, Freya Johnson, believe Batman is queer. However, as pointed out by Ellen, Johnson does not think Batman is gay, other then pointing out that there are queerness in the film. Is queer so wrong? I do not think so since queerness is always around us.

I agree with the students in my class when they saw that Dick seeing Bruce in a towel have a different meaning. Why would Dick be in the same restroom as Bruce? Well, it is a big (empty) mansion with so many people going about, it is only normal that Dick would try to find someone to talk to. It would be extremely boring living in a large creepy mansion with only two other living being (not including the dog) aside from yourself. Also since Bruce took Dick in, it is also only normal that Dick is attach to Bruce. About the love scene probably did not show much other then what is needed. When you see two people together in what seem like a "love" scene is there really much details that people need? Half the people already know what is going to happen, do they not?

Not saying that the two does not represent queer qualities, but different people does view things differently. I agree with Johnson when she mention that the bad guys are always seem to be even queerer to distract viewer from seeing the hero as being queer. This case is true, but it is also pretty much stereotyping that if you are queer or gay then you are the bad guy or villain.

I did not overly understand the article. It seems like Johnson is trying to point out too many things and not make enough sense of them all, or it could just be me because again I did not understand her article.

Random + Paper

So I woke on Saturday morning thinking that it was December. It was snowing and unbelievable cold! After work that same day I went to Super K and the parking lot was pack! It seems like a Christmas eve as everyone last minute shops for gift, but there was no Christmas tree, colorful lights or Santa when I enter the store at twelve in the morning, there were half-gone Easter goodies. Snow in Spring!! I wonder if Santa have forgotten a reindeer and had come back in search of him/her.

For my final essay, I am stuck at deciding whether to write about the zombies' makeup and details or zombies within religion. When zombie in religion was brought up in class I thought it was an interesting topic versus zombies' makeup and details. In my culture there are many folks and tales about people coming across zombies and what not. A cousin who just visit from Thailand say that he and a bunch of friends were riding bikes one morning and saw a person dress in black (in traditional Hmong's dead outfit) standing beside a tree. When he saw my cousin and his friends riding up he hid his face beside a tree so they would not see his face. However when they rode by my cousin thought the man looked odd so he turn back and he saw that the man's face was rotting away. It's hard to believe, but there are many people who have claim to see the dead wondering around the roads in the early morning or late evening.

If I was to do zombies' makeup and details I was going to do a comparison of how zombies makeup are like earlier when zombies film first came out to today. When watching Night of the Living Dead the make up looked nothing like makeup these days. The zombies in the film had grey paint and some with little rotten away details which looks extremely fake. Today zombies are gross looking! You can see rip lips to nearly decayed zombies. Again, I still trying to figure out which topic to do my paper on. Hopefully when I go to the library Monday I will be able to find interesting articles on these two topic to help me chose.

American's Next Top Model C.8

This episode of Top Model, to me, was extremely stupid. They were invited to a party were Tyra's manager was at. Jael end up getting pull into the pool by 50 cent after she annoyed him to death. I really like Jael's picture, but I think that sometimes she just does not know when to leave someone alone or go over board. This really sets a bad reputation for Detroit.

In this episode the girls have to think of a nickname for themselves, an name in which will make people remember them. I think it was interesting and it is true about your name. If you have a unique name you do catches a lot of attentions.

Also in this episode all the member confronted Renee about her attitude problem after Nicole Richie told Jael at the party that Renee had say the she was the bitch of the house. Point to this is that it makes American seem not trust worthy. If one can not get along with other, how can one success or make friends/allies?

At the judging Whitney and Sarah were the bottom two. Sarah was sent home to my surprise. I know she poses a lot but Whitney have been in the bottom two for how many time? I just don't know why they kept giving her chances after chances. I know she's a beautiful girl, but her picture are just to pretty and not model, unlike Natasha who have improved a lot.

Land Of The Dead

I like horror films but for some odd reason I've never finish watching this film. No matter how many time I watch it, I always end up only seeing the beginning and the ending.

Watching Land of The Dead in class then again at home, I realize things I've never realize before. If I remember correctly there are only two African American who you actually see in the film; one is the butler and the other is "Big Daddy." Most of the characters in Land of The Dead are mainly Caucasian and Mexican. (And of course there was that big Asian guy toward the end who only got so many lines.)

While paying close attention to the zombies on the film I realize that you do not really see any other zombies other then "Big Daddy" and these two (or three) zombies who are always beside him. Those zombies are Caucasian. Another factor I realize while watching this is that all the zombies seem to be middle class citizen. There were not any high class.

Another something that I realize is how "Big Daddy" seem to learn new things. I see that he learns things due to what he sees. For example something I saw that caught my eyes today in class that did not at home while I was watching it, was when someone was tossing propane tank that lights fires and the zombie (who just came out of the water and are wet) caught on fire. He then use that act against Mr. K.

I am not sure what I am going to write about for my final essay, but I am going to try to re-watch the film to see if there is anything that will catch my attention. However at the moment, I'm thinking about doing race/gender or horror movies.

Goong S

Episode two is just too FUNNY!

Everyone know how kings and queens, princes and princess are suppose to stereotypically act like. Well, in episode two of Goong S, Kang Hoo was being to his training to become a prince, or king in this matter. Kang Hoo like many teenagers do not like studying. Who in there right mind will? When he was asked to memorize a chart of previous kings and their importance he found reply, "I suddenly feel pain in my stomach." Sounds familiar? I know it do, because my younger sibling uses that excuse to try and get out of studying all the time. However in this case it was just funny because Kang Hoo was twenty-year-old. The key factor is that if your a upper class you have to be proper. How proper? You have to eat a certain way, speak a certain way, and even drink a certain way, in a high class fancy like way.

Another factor that this episode brought about is how woman are looked down upon. The queen who was holding Kang Hoo seats for him, wants him to hurry, learn and take his place as soon as possible because she says she could not handle it anymore. Why? Because she's a woman a everyone looks down on her, thinking that she could not do anything as well as a king would. This makes it really hard on her, especially when the prime minster is pressing all this hardship on her so she would give up and give the crowd to his son, a "suitable" king.

This episode also shows how advance technology has improve. Take for example when the queen's mother (I believe) was examining Kang Hoo cell phone. She could not see anything like it and thought it was the latest model. However when it was shown to the prime minster's son (who I have yet to remember his name, I believe it's Joon) he say it was not. This episode showed a lot of technology. How so? There were not just cell phone flying about in this episode but Kang Hoo even found himself a PSP (a white, limited edition, extremely RARE) lying on his counter. Apart from that while he was learning to be proper and memorize kings and what not, you can see the advance technology that is used to help him study. There were laptop (can not remember what brand), over head and even those little ear piece device things.

Apart from all this things that I have notice I must say Kang Hoo have a extremely neat ring tone!

The Empress (Myung Se Bin) is in her early 30s, but she is still not married. Since, the 1st successor to the throne died, the royal family is in search for a new successor. Incidentally, they come to know of a young man who was in fact a son of the prince to a woman who left the Palace for her to be able to keep her pregnancy a secret. The young man's name was Lee Hoo (Se7en), more commonly known to his friends as Kang Hoo. Lee Hoo worked as a delivery boy at a Chinese restaurant, and was known for his 7-minute maximum delivery time. Lee Hoo had been brought up as more of a punk than a prince so his habits and his way of conversing were very different from the people of royal blood. Although he had never dreamt of living in the Palace, he one day finds himself immersing himself in its grandeur and improving himself to prove that he indeed deserves to be called the Successor to the throne. He soon finds out that not only will he be facing lessons to the path of royalty, and dilemmas of love and of stature, but he will also learn to compete for the position he had been, first
and foremostly, called for.

------------------------------

Watching episode one of this drama I realize how carefree middle class people are portrayed to be. We are not all always carefree, however most of us do act like a bunch of crazy animal trying to beat our competitor.

Se7en, or Kang Hoo as he is called in the drama, used bits of English in this first episode. This proves that English have influences a lot of culture and many culture have learn it. It is a good thing for communication, however is it always good that other countries learn our language and we not there? How long will the English language be global? Se7en speaking English, to me, shows me that we must learn other language beside our owns and our neighboring countries. Se7en being a great singer, and I being a fan of his, he speaks fluent Korean and Japanese, conversational English and Chinese, and even a little bit of Thai. Not taking his real background into consideration, Se7en plays a mid-class teenager who speaks English, meaning that students in Asia no matter middle or upper class knows some sort of foreign language. A shorter way to put this is, Asia is getting more advance pretty fast.

This episode also show honor and family. When his "uncle" told him that he was the Prince he was surprise, but show his respects and took up his place. His "uncle" showed honor because he hid him for 20 years because of his promise to Kang Hoo's mother.

The strange thing was that the queen was awfully young. She was in her thirty, which was suppose to be ten years Kang Hoo's senior. Not to mention that during a showcase Kang Hoo met some from his grade school that did not like him and she was proud that she was working for the palace, even if it was to be part of the working staffs. This first episode is still pretty confusing but things will clear up, I hope.

Reading and Writing About Movies

I do not think much when it comes to something visual. Most of the time I just go along with it without even knowing it. I never knew that whenever I watched a preview I determine the genre of it, but I do know that I determined the genre when I watched the preview. Confusing? It's probably true to most people like me. We are just too use to it that we just do not think about it any more.

Horror, romance, thriller, etc a preview of a film lets you know what to expect from it. This expectation gives way to what the viewer will be excited about. If a viewer is about love stories, they will in fact go for the loving happy couple preview promising of a romantic love story apart from the terrified dark horror. This is also an example of how we genre movies and we do not get the outcome we expect we get disappointed. I have experienced a lot of this. For example when I went out to watch "The Messenger," I was expecting to get the scare of a life time, however was disappointed when the horror was not what I assume it would be.

Movies have genres and they do teaches moral (some of them). I agree with this introduction to the chapter about moving teaching us how we are to be in the world. Movies does play a big role in our society. Most girls dreams of a fairy tale wedding, a handsome prince charming, a honeymoon in Hawaii and romantic walks on the sun setting beaches, that is because that's how every happy couple were made out to do/be like by the media.

Reality Essay

I learn a lot from this essay. One thing I learn for sure is never to believe what your ink level says and to always have an extra ink at hand just in case your printer turns evil on you.

On the other hand. I thought for sure that this essay would be a lot easier then the first essay. I got an outline set up and everything. However when I actually went to the writing I realize just how hard it is to write it out. It seems easy to write draw an outline off the top of you head but when it comes time to writing it out. . .that was a whole completely new story. I learn to have a better outline next time.

When I say I learn a lot from this essay, I really did. I learn to look at reality television in a whole new way. I used to just watch a show, but now I can see just how stereotypical they are all. I guess it's not always the greatest to think about something when your watching it, but it is interesting when you do.

An example of what I learn is of Fear Factor. I barely, hardly think about why the women always get more time, but doing this essay I finally realize it was to make women seem weaker. While watching the game show it never even occur to me that women gets more time. It just seem, overall to me, as natural. Having to think and because of this essay, it made me see just how, not only television program, but reality program too stereotype genders.

Maybe this world is all about stereotyping?

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 8

While watching the first episode of America’s Next Top Model last week I got really excited that there was someone from Detroit, Michigan. I, too, was really happy when the annoying girl Kathleen was kick off the show. Why? She was just to preppy with her “Tyra you’re so beautiful” dumb and confusing talk. However after watching episode two I realize how much I wanted to slap Jaslene. Then later after I think about it, I realize how annoying everyone of them were.

On episode two Jaslene who was on last season but did not make it claims everyone is just jealous of her because she has the full package. She even told her mother on the phone that all the girls were after her because she has her signature walk. It annoys the heck out of me when she started crying. Come on this is a completion right? Your tears mean nothing to anyone. Crying after losing to a challenge after you acted all that. What a pity. Better learn next time not to be such a hot head but I doubt she will take the advice. Not after telling the judges about how the girls were all already on her because she was a great model. VOTE HER OFF PLEASE!

After being excited about having someone from Detroit being on the show my excitement when down the drain. What a disgrace to our city. I hope nobody think Detroiter acts like Jael, who’s from Detroit and is half-black. Being half-black you can not really tell, why, because like the judges say her “father must have had some strong genes.” Jael seem really fun and loving, but how she acts on the show, it really was a pain. Walking around the house almost nude. That is just ridiculous! How she wants everyone to be nice to her and be her friends. This just makes me think about how Detroit acted like when the Super Bowl was here. I am not saying that Detroiters are not nice but Detroiters got to stop acting fake most of the time. Jael looks like someone The Real World would cast

Bad Family

Episode 7 to Ending

Once you get to know a group of people it is extremely hard to let them go. These last few episodes show how the stage family starting to develop real family bonds. The stage family took us from being strangers to being a real family. In one of the last episode Dal Gun, the fake uncle who is an orphan, finally found his in father in Hang Gu, the fake grandfather who had never marry and never had a son. Also in the episode it shows the discovery that Hang Gu has lung cancer. The family worry about him as if he was really their true grandfather and beg that he go to the hospital for operation.

The last few episodes also include the climax in which Na Rim regains her full memory. Na Rim seem to experience an after shock after Dal Gun and Yang Ah told her about her family accident. Na Rim seem to under go denial which is common among people who have lost someone special in their live. However being a child you can see how harder it is and even worst when it’s her whole family.

At the end the stage family became so close that they could not leave each other. Na Rim although she have regain her memory could not see the family she have lived with go. She was attach to them, they were like a family to her now. Although she seemed against them after she have regained her memory she realize how much the family have done for her and how they have treated her, therefore she loved them like her own.

What I saw that is really "unreal" is how everything was solve at the end and they ended up living happily ever after. To tell step by step as to how everything happen and was solve would take forever, but what is really unbelievable is how Na Rim got her dairy publish. In real life a child could not get a diary of picture and little fact publish, even if it’s a children book. Or could they?

SEVIS

I think the GEOC meeting was pretty interesting. When we were told that international students have to pay an addition fifty dollar I was surprise. I never knew about this situation until now. I think it is extremely unfair for those students because we are all students so why should they have to pay more when they already have to pay for their visa.

At the meeting, I think the speakers did not do all that great of a job. They lack a lot of information and even though they say that they have done many research there wasn’t much proof of it. An example is when one of the student as if they have asked about the SEVIS from other university that have repel it. Their answer was unclear. The student speakers seem to have expected two of the WSU administrates to show up and they to do the answers so that’s why they seem pretty unprepared. WSU administrate brought up a even worst example by not showing up.

Apart from the unclear answers, it was really hard to heard two out of the four speakers. Although the room was pretty small I think a microphone could have helped. Other then that, the fact that most of the students who attended the meeting seem to be Undergraduate they should have instead of kept using WSU "Graduate" student eliminated the Graduate part because the fee not only affect them but all WSU international students. I think they would have gain more support if they have just eliminated the whole graduate thing, because by using graduate many undergraduate would think it doesn’t apply to them or their peers.

Nonetheless I really hope that WSU repel the fee and tell us what it is for. I would really go to the next meeting, but it’s held during one of my classes, but I hope all goes well for them because how WSU is treating its international students really rots.

Society's Need For A Queer Solution

I agree that homosexual are being portrait badly and yes back to what we have study about earlier this semester, stereotyped.

This essay define queer as being a no gender like, but I don't think the society will ever see it in that way. Society is just too rooted to the gender role and everything. I personally have nothing against homosexual, because they're just human like me. In fact out of all humans, I find myself most comfortable with them because they are more to me "normal" and don't try to make me feel different.

I really don't know why everyone makes such a big deal out of this issue, everyone is human right? Just because some one is attracted to their same sex doesn't make them an alien from out of space!

I farther more agree that the media does make a big impact on the way we sees thing. I get really annoy when a certain group of people are portrait wrongly or badly and homosexual are one of those group. I have seen the episode of Friends that the essay mention, about the two lesbian who are trying to rise a kid. The episode annoyed me so much that i rarely watched Friends from that day on. Sure it's fun to laugh at others, but try putting yourself in their shoes. I think Carol and Susan should be ashamed of playing such stupid, inhuman if you can call it that, role.

I love Ellen Degeneres. I think she's just a fun loving person. Just because she "came out" that she was gay meant nothing much to me, because she was still the same person. I think trying to "fix" or "help" homosexual and treating it as a "disease" is wrong. Everyone is human and is entitle to their rights to act as such in the way that they want to. Just because the mass of us are heterosexual means nothing, we can't make a good look bad just because they're a minority group. If homosexual was the mass and heterosexual wasn't, how would we have felt?

I hate to say this but everything from the Bible isn't always worth following. I mean, who wrote the Bible that everyone so reads nowadays? If you ask me, even thought we think we're free from a monarch ruling, we really are not. King James still rules over us with his version of the Bible in which most of us reads.

Bad Family

There is a saying that, "the one you detest the most is the one you’re going to miss the most." In episode eight Dal Gun, the fake uncle and the founder of the stage family, was told by his old boss, who was the leader of the gang debt collectors, to leave Seoul or his friends and family would get hurt. In order to prevent anyone from getting hurt and to escape becoming a debt collector once more, he agreed to leave.

Before Dal Gun left he gave the stage control of the stage family to Gi Dong, who was the fake father. The day that he was going to leave he tried to complement everyone, although they never really got along and he was always threatening to kill them. He also tried to make everything right between him and Yang Ah, who was the fake sister, because it was because of his refusal to destroy the street market that had brought the debt collectors to her home and destroyed it. He repainted her home and fixed everything, which to me is unbelievable for one man to do in less then a day, but then again it is television.

I think that even though the stage family wasn’t really a true family they started to feel that way as time goes by and got used to having everyone around. I thought it was really sad when he was saying goodbye to Na Rim at her school, because at first he had no feeling for her but by making money acting as her fake uncle. I think some how he started to get attached to the little girl because she’s such a sweet child and so vulnerable to the world. He had tears in his eyes and it seems really hard for him to say goodbye to her.

I think a lot of us can relate to this situation. Maybe not demanded to leave our family, but we all do leave them once in a while if not for a trip or for school and we do feel awfully sad. A good example would be a college student who lives on campus. I have a friend who lives on campus and every time she goes back home she never wants to return back to her school campus because she misses her family, especially her sister who she always fights with. She told me that she would cry every time she had to return because it was so hard for her to leave even though she knew she was going to come back home during the summer.

Black Bart

I thought this essay was very interesting. I never really thought of Bart as being a white character or a black character. I've always define him as a cartoon that fits most people. To me Bart had always been a yellow cartoon.

I think I can see why many African American would wears a Black Bart T-shirt. Since Bart pretty much represent a lot of people or the way they feel, I believe to African American Black Bart wasn't just an icon or a symbol of some kind. Black Bart could have been about values. Bart is an "underachiever" how can he be a culture value? I believe it's because many can put themselves in his shoes.

During one of the interview of two girls one the girl say that Bart, although he is suppose to be a white character, acts like a black character. I really disagree with this because I think Bart have a little of all of us in him. I, for one, can say that I swear in public and pulls pranks on people and I am either black or white. To me The Simpson's family will always be a yellow cartoon family.

The Reality TV Suite

After the class discussion a question crept into my mind. Other then going on reality TV to get fame what else motivates people to go on reality TV? For fame there is only a chance of one in a gazillion, so why do people do it? For example, American Idols, many know that there is a slim chance that they will get in. However they take that chance and end up embarrassing themselves and then later on they want to sue the judges or the producer because such and such happens. Don't the people who goes onto reality TV shows know that the show was meant to make a fool of them live on national television?

The article mentions how reality TV chooses their people. Can this article be any true? On American Top Model, I can't help but notice that there is always that bitchy black girl and or a white girl. On the show there is always that nerdy white girl who is EXTREMELY SKINNY (or in another sense . . . anorexia). The show also to make it seem racial always have that Asian girl who have extremely low self-esteem who never wins. Did I forget to mention there is always that black girl who is really at ease and seem to do everything to the judge likings?

What is very interesting to me is...if reality TV are mainly based on voting people off or to keep them in the game, then why does all those American Idols viewer who tuned in and vote...could not make it to the voting pole for the election?

Bad Family

We have all tried to recall something but can not due to memory block or interference. We all know how annoying it get us when we can not remember. Imagine being a child knowing that your memory is block and that you can not remember anything even if you wanted to.
Everyone wants to be respected by the person they like and everyone wants to fit in. Nobody wants to live a life they dislike.
Episode seven revolves around all these thing.

In this episode NaRim finally remember something when there was a power failure. The family then thought that if they react out what had happen they might help her remember. However even thought the "stage" family had only wanted to help, I believe NaRim felt pressured. She would feel depress and cry because everyone seem to be forcing her to remember when she could not.
Every have a time when they could not remember a event even thought it is right on the ends of their finger tips. We all know how stressful it is. How do you think a seven year old would feel?

This episode also introduced GongMin character to us a little more. Before he was just the fake brother found sleeping on the street who works at a salon and was called "master." As it seem he know owns a restaurant in which he and a girl he liked went to dine in. However he kept it a secret from her so that she will like him. What I think about GongMin is that he ran away from home so he wont have to get into business and instead do something he likes...become a hair stylist. However to make the girl he likes like him he took her to a nice fancy restaurant in which he owns. I think he, pretty much, is trying to live a normal teenage life.

Essay & Class

I think overall my essay should be OK. I did not really understand what was excepted of us much, such as how the paper should "be" like. Would be great if we have better examples then just essays from the book. I wrote the essay the way I thought it would suppose to be done so I hope it is right.

The think if we have got all the information on how to write the essay and everything all at once we would have know what is excepted of us. Handing us little bits of information as we process can make us confuse. Not to mention, sometimes making us rewrite our whole entire essay over.

I think working in small groups really help. We are not all great writer so getting some free backs from our peers helps. First I did not really like the idea of working in group. I thought that my group would judge my paper badly and what not so first I was really against it. However it was not so bad and my group was really kind so I think working in small peer editing group is of great help.

I think the class itself is very interesting, not what I thought 1020 is suppose to be like. I like how the class talks everything over, however I think it would be best if you (the instructor starts it off for us instead of just going "so what did you guys think about the reading?" I tend to shut down right when that question comes up. I think we, the students, would probably like it more if we were ask questions about a subjects first then go on from there.

The Messengers

I was going to write more about "Bad Family" but turns out I went to the movie this week and wanted to write about "The Messengers" instead. However I will continue to write more on"Bad Family" in the future.

"The Messengers" first surprised me by being one of the many works done by my favorite horror directors, The Pang Brothers. I've been a great fan of their movie (although I haven't see a lot of them) ever since I saw "The Eye" and whoever haven't seen it I recommend it! Back to "The Messengers" (which I wasn't suppose to see due to religious purpose but went anyway) . . .

"The Messengers" starts off in a black and white scene with this woman and her son who seem extremely frighten. I think the reason for this scene is to confuse the viewer and to make them think of it as a true horror. As for the black and white picture, I suppose there is something that get to us when we hear those haunted music being play and there is no color other then black and white. I think the two colors alone works to make a feeling of fear and also to make viewer know that it was something like a flashback of some sort or something that had already happen.

This movie also involved a lot of crows. As horror lovers we all should know that whenever you see a crow or a black cat in a horror movie it's a sigh that something bad was going to happen. This movie uses extremely large crows. I guess the size of the crows makes a person fears them. I haven't seen a crow for ages now so I can't really say now big they really are, but in the movie they look above average size crows.

I liked how everything was happening but the ending . . . I did NOT like the ending much. To me the ending was stupid, it messed up the whole movie and not to mention made the "horror" movie "un-horror." Why? Well, you should go see for yourself why. The movie to me was very disappointing. Not one of the Pang's best work. It could have been better if the ending was different.

Interchapter: Reading and Writing About Images

Everything around us is a text, or a text is an image, we just sees it differently because of the how we were taught about them. Everything that surrounds us can be read and carries some kind of messages.
Just by looking at an image, a picture, or a setting we read it according to what we know. Every one have a different interpret of meaning of things. For example by looking at the two photos on page 370. The two photos shows two very different neighborhoods. People from the neighborhood pictured in the second photo would not thing too highly of the people living in the first neighborhood. To those people, the people living in the first neighborhood are low income, most likely criminals, who lives in a ghetto. The people who lives in the first neighborhood would think different of themselves and would think the people from the second neighborhood are high-class clean freak suburban-er. Either way both would view each other negatively.
Take Detroit and Warren for example. People in Warren are afraid to enter Detroit because they are afraid that they will get rob at every stop signs or that they will get shot by a drive by. Warren would think that they're the more sociable people because they live in a better neighborhood and knows how to organize everything. Detroit-er however would have a different view. Detroit to them would be home, a place in which they're free to wander in the streets and meets with friends. They would view Warren as a middle-high class people who wakes up every more and function more or less like a robot programed to do daily activities.
The reason why I use this example is because I have been to schools in the suburbs and I always get asked the same question. Do people die in front of your house?

Bad Family

I am really not a TV show fan. No matter how much I try, I just can not force myself to be loyal to a TV program. I have disgraced myself. Not really! ;p
For my television blog I decided to do it on a SBS comedy TV series I just bought, which has eight discs with a total of sixteen episodes. I have just finish watching episode one to six which was hilarious! The series is called "Bul Ryang Ga Jok" (or "Bad Family"), written by Lee Hee-myung and Han Eun-kyung and directed by Yoo In-shik. This series was aired on March 22, 2006 to May 11, 2006 in South Korean.

Here is a synopsis of the series from Fansites Hollywood K-DRAMA:

Cast: Kim Myung-min, Nam Sang-mi, Park Jin-woo, Hyun Young, Kim
Hee-chul
This drama is about a very impaired, abnormal family's with a wide
range of
characters. The thing is, the members of this "family" aren't all
really
related! They are a "staged" family. Oh Dal-geon (Kim Myun-min) who
was being
chased by gangster recruited a bunch of people to be a part of a
family of a
young child named Baek Na-reem (Lee Young-yoo). Na-reem has
amnesia and her real
family died in a car accident. It is to believed that
the "car accident" wasn't
really an accident. To find out the truth,
Dal-geon brings in people to play the
roles of different members of
Na-reem's family to help her regain her memory.
Kim Yang-ah (Nam Sang-mi)
was an orphan at a very young age. She had lost
her family, but plays a role
in this "bad" family. Ha Tae-kyung (Park Jin-woo)
is Yang-ah's boss who
falls for her. see how things heat up as Yang-ah,
Tae-kyung and Dal-geon
into a love triangle and how this family life isn't all
that sweet,
especially when some do not get along with each other!
Episodes: 16
Official Site: SBS
DVD: Not released

While watching the third disc (episodes 5 and 6) I thought to
myself "ANOTHER LOVE TRI-ANGLE!" I am not much of a fan of "love tri-angle" but it seems that all Korean dramas/series have them. What is so unique about that? However the first two discs which focus more on the child, Na-reem, and the
"family" was really interesting. It really made me wonder if many "big people"
like CEOs and the such really go through all these illegal stuffs just to obtain
their "higher" position. How Dal-geon got the "staged" family together was
something else. I could understand him using the people who were indebted to
him, but to pick up a kid who he had found sleeping on the street? He must be
really desperate, which he was.
So we have the daughter-in-law (who lost her only child a long time ago and sells to-go coffee on the street for a living) and the father-in-law (who is a dance instructor) are in a "friendly" relationship (they were already like that before the "family" was formed). The son-in-law (who sent his children to Canada for a better education and his wife [who cheated on him in Canada then later demanded for a divorce] to take care of them and who hasn't seen them for a long time now because he can not afford plane ticket to go visit them so he works as a debt collector to make money to
send to them) is starting to fall for the daughter-in-law (who is the woman that
is giving him so much trouble at work because she will not pay up the loan she
borrowed) and gets very jealous of her "friendly" relationship with the
father-in-law. The mother-in-law (who has an open street restaurant who gives
out free coffee for her customer seems to be "stealing" the daughter-in-law's
customer) and daughter-in-law despise each other (because of the business issue
that usually gets them into fist fights). The uncle (who is the founder of the
"family" and who is an ex-gangster, who is making just about everyone in the
"family" to work for him to pay off their debt to him) and the granddaughter
(who is trying to rise three younger brothers on her own since her parents died
some time ago, and who blames the uncle for burning down her boat in which she
made her living out of) are starting to fall for each other. The grandson...the
grandson (who is known as "yellow hair") is a total stranger. There was a part
in which some people were calling him "master," but he works at a hair salon?
Did you get all of that?
So far the series is getting really exciting and hilarious! Can't wait to watch more of it next week and find out what happens!

Japan English Class Gaki no Tsukai

While I was on the computer today, taking several breaks from my essay, I came across this TV clip. The clip was from a Japanese reality show called “Gaki no Tsukai - Batsu Gemu ”. Many people such as myself do not understand Japanese, however this show proves that you do not have to understand Japanese to know what is going on. “Gaki no Tsukai - Batsu Gemu ” is a no laughing game, if you laugh you are in for a punishment.
This clip takes place in a Japanese’s English classroom setting where some eleven (with five main) or so (male) participates dressed in school uniform and seated in desks as they awaits their instructor, who upon entering immediately announces to the class that they were going to watch a English lesson video. This remark in turn starts the game.
This video that they watched was of a man trying to read, count and say his days in English. He is not the best English speaker so as struggles to do all the above, he had a bit of trouble (i.e. stuttering after almost every word, sounding out, mispronunciations and etc). The frustration and trouble with the guy in the video caused the main participates of the class to burst out laughing, which they were submitted to a punishment. What was this punishment? A whip on the behind (hard) with a bamboo stick. After getting many of this wiping many of the participates tries to fight themselves and keep from laughing, however this did not help and everyone ends up laughing which caused for more wiping.
I do not understand why anyone would subject themselves to suffering and pain just for the flame and money? I know I would never join such a show like that, I would pretty much rather watch it on the sideline. I think there was at least one or two bamboo sticks that broken during the taping of this show. Why do people watch such program like this? The answer is probably for entertainment. Many are entertained at seeing other gets hurt or a better way of putting it, violence, and not to mention mocking those who are not as “good” as ourselves. Violence is just another source of entertainment these days and no one really takes to consideration that it is real. People have to open their eyes and see that violent, although they are fun to watch, are serious even if it is volunteering. Laughing at other hardship or making fun of others because they lack in a certain area is very cruel! No wonder why children these days have lack respects and manners for others. Apart from that how many deaths and suicides have there been in this this world due to abuse and mean jokes because someone thought it was fun and entertaining? The answer....
Ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten...*and the number goes on*

How Advertising Informs to Our Benefit

I never really thought much about advertising. Advertising really was just out there and sure I learn from it, but never have I really ceased to think about them. I think that it is a good idea that advertiser are partnering up with health cares. This lets us know what is out there and how to prevent or in other words get onto the right track. However, like what we discussed in class, advertising does leave out lots of important facts. Such as eating too many fibers can help prevent cancer but can also lead to other things when consumed too much.
The class discusses really opened my eyes to things I have not really took to consider, such as when brand states that so many “doctors recommended” their products. Today lesson really much shown me how narrow-minded I was. I guess in the future I have to be more open minded as to what advertising is trying to put out there in front of me. As for what we discussed in class about ‘Proactive’, the product do not work. Been there done that. After using the product for some two to three weeks my face did not get any result other then made my skin so dry that it hurts and not to mention when trying to put on lotions my face stain like no other. I am currently trying out another product called ‘Bio-oil’, I have heard a lot of good things about it even though it is not known by all through out America like Proactive, or maybe even known at all. So, yes, I have had my share of falling for advertisement.

That 70's Show

I am not much of a television person. Instead of sitting my butt on the couch all day or for a couple of hours I tend to sit in front of my computer. For our television blog post I decided to just flick through the channel. I will try to find a show that I am going to keep up with next week (maybe). Anyway, I watched “That 70’s Show.”
Today episode (a rerun), I believe is pretty much related to today’s teens. The episode was about Donna and Eric doing “the deed” and are trying to tell their parents (or Donna’s anyway) that they have done it. A lot of teenagers go through this phase and they fear that their parents would be anger at them when they find out. Donna had a hard time trying to tell her parents about it. Every time she tries to, she would end up say something else. In stead of trying to encourage her to tell or at least explain herself, her father would make her feels tiny and small causing her to have the urge to lie out of situation, which tends to happen a lot among teenagers. Of course at the end Eric and Donna went over to her house and told her parents together and her father did not take it too well and say that he was going to go to his room. Eric mother did not take it too well either. She felt as if she had just lost her baby boy, so what she did was stay in bed all day and mourn to herself.
Parents, sometimes, do not tend to like the idea that their babies are all grown up and can take care of themselves. They have to lighten up and know that their children, although they are grown, will still need them no matter what and that it is not the end of the world just because their children wants to be a man or woman.

"Closure" and "Art"

The reading assignment for class today was “Closure” and “Art” by Scott McCloud. I was a bit surprise that the reading was a comic stripe. A very interesting reading, but I could not understand half of what the reading was about. I understood a little of the “Art” reading, but really have no clue what “Closure” was talking about. I believe art haves something to do with our imagination. What we do when we are bored and do not even realize it. Such art that we create out of boredom can be drawings, inventions, music and et cetera. Closure? The first thing that comes to be when I think of closure is the end of something or conclusion of something. I guess it has something to do with how everyone sees a completed things, object or action? How we put everything together into pieces at the end. Such as the conclusion of a movie, what we are going to do when we have to buy something and things of the such.
Apart from just doing the reading, I found the art or comic of the reading really distracting. I suppose it is probably the reason why I could not understand most of the reading. Pictures does say a lot of things to other but for others, I believe like myself, would probably understand the text more if it was written out for me instead of pictures. The cartoon was really friendly discussing closure and art, but it can be a big distraction.

HI EVERYONE!

This is a test run of my blog, since this is my very first time using one.

My name is Seng and I am a freshman at Wayne State University. As of the moment my major is still undecided, although I am interested in Pre-Social Works. What I am hoping to learn in Eng1020 is to become a better writer, write better constructive papers and to be able to read people and my surroundings better. Some of my hobbies consist of listening to music (at the moment I am currently obsessed with Kpop music) and writing short fan fiction (whenever possible). I listen to a variety of music; anything that catches my ear and is not considered rackets in my book. I love to get to know people and their background or culture. I currently have friends (penpals) almost all over the world. Most of my friends consider me as fun, helpful, kind, generous and a “DORK” once they get to know me. Define dork for me please anyone?

Well, I hope I will get to know everyone this semester. I will try my best to be helpful to everyone and hopefully everyone will do the same to me.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. ^____^
