"Closure" and "Art"

The reading assignment for class today was “Closure” and “Art” by Scott McCloud. I was a bit surprise that the reading was a comic stripe. A very interesting reading, but I could not understand half of what the reading was about. I understood a little of the “Art” reading, but really have no clue what “Closure” was talking about. I believe art haves something to do with our imagination. What we do when we are bored and do not even realize it. Such art that we create out of boredom can be drawings, inventions, music and et cetera. Closure? The first thing that comes to be when I think of closure is the end of something or conclusion of something. I guess it has something to do with how everyone sees a completed things, object or action? How we put everything together into pieces at the end. Such as the conclusion of a movie, what we are going to do when we have to buy something and things of the such.
Apart from just doing the reading, I found the art or comic of the reading really distracting. I suppose it is probably the reason why I could not understand most of the reading. Pictures does say a lot of things to other but for others, I believe like myself, would probably understand the text more if it was written out for me instead of pictures. The cartoon was really friendly discussing closure and art, but it can be a big distraction.

We'll talk more about this in class, but closure in the article is about the conclusions your mind jumps to when you see a particular image. For example, when you see an octagon, you think stop sign. When you see a man and a woman out having dinner together, you assume they are a couple. Because art, and advertisements, have a limited space in which to tell their stories, they rely heavily on the conclusions we jump to when we see certain images. Advertisers use our natural tendency to jump to these conclusions in their ads to sell not only a product but an idea or image with the product. Like if a cologne ad shows a couple in a sexy pose, we jump to the conclusion that the cologne will make us more sexy and we can become one of the people in the ad. Make sense?

Good post!
