Japan English Class Gaki no Tsukai

While I was on the computer today, taking several breaks from my essay, I came across this TV clip. The clip was from a Japanese reality show called “Gaki no Tsukai - Batsu Gemu ”. Many people such as myself do not understand Japanese, however this show proves that you do not have to understand Japanese to know what is going on. “Gaki no Tsukai - Batsu Gemu ” is a no laughing game, if you laugh you are in for a punishment.
This clip takes place in a Japanese’s English classroom setting where some eleven (with five main) or so (male) participates dressed in school uniform and seated in desks as they awaits their instructor, who upon entering immediately announces to the class that they were going to watch a English lesson video. This remark in turn starts the game.
This video that they watched was of a man trying to read, count and say his days in English. He is not the best English speaker so as struggles to do all the above, he had a bit of trouble (i.e. stuttering after almost every word, sounding out, mispronunciations and etc). The frustration and trouble with the guy in the video caused the main participates of the class to burst out laughing, which they were submitted to a punishment. What was this punishment? A whip on the behind (hard) with a bamboo stick. After getting many of this wiping many of the participates tries to fight themselves and keep from laughing, however this did not help and everyone ends up laughing which caused for more wiping.
I do not understand why anyone would subject themselves to suffering and pain just for the flame and money? I know I would never join such a show like that, I would pretty much rather watch it on the sideline. I think there was at least one or two bamboo sticks that broken during the taping of this show. Why do people watch such program like this? The answer is probably for entertainment. Many are entertained at seeing other gets hurt or a better way of putting it, violence, and not to mention mocking those who are not as “good” as ourselves. Violence is just another source of entertainment these days and no one really takes to consideration that it is real. People have to open their eyes and see that violent, although they are fun to watch, are serious even if it is volunteering. Laughing at other hardship or making fun of others because they lack in a certain area is very cruel! No wonder why children these days have lack respects and manners for others. Apart from that how many deaths and suicides have there been in this this world due to abuse and mean jokes because someone thought it was fun and entertaining? The answer....
Ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten...*and the number goes on*

How Advertising Informs to Our Benefit

I never really thought much about advertising. Advertising really was just out there and sure I learn from it, but never have I really ceased to think about them. I think that it is a good idea that advertiser are partnering up with health cares. This lets us know what is out there and how to prevent or in other words get onto the right track. However, like what we discussed in class, advertising does leave out lots of important facts. Such as eating too many fibers can help prevent cancer but can also lead to other things when consumed too much.
The class discusses really opened my eyes to things I have not really took to consider, such as when brand states that so many “doctors recommended” their products. Today lesson really much shown me how narrow-minded I was. I guess in the future I have to be more open minded as to what advertising is trying to put out there in front of me. As for what we discussed in class about ‘Proactive’, the product do not work. Been there done that. After using the product for some two to three weeks my face did not get any result other then made my skin so dry that it hurts and not to mention when trying to put on lotions my face stain like no other. I am currently trying out another product called ‘Bio-oil’, I have heard a lot of good things about it even though it is not known by all through out America like Proactive, or maybe even known at all. So, yes, I have had my share of falling for advertisement.

That 70's Show

I am not much of a television person. Instead of sitting my butt on the couch all day or for a couple of hours I tend to sit in front of my computer. For our television blog post I decided to just flick through the channel. I will try to find a show that I am going to keep up with next week (maybe). Anyway, I watched “That 70’s Show.”
Today episode (a rerun), I believe is pretty much related to today’s teens. The episode was about Donna and Eric doing “the deed” and are trying to tell their parents (or Donna’s anyway) that they have done it. A lot of teenagers go through this phase and they fear that their parents would be anger at them when they find out. Donna had a hard time trying to tell her parents about it. Every time she tries to, she would end up say something else. In stead of trying to encourage her to tell or at least explain herself, her father would make her feels tiny and small causing her to have the urge to lie out of situation, which tends to happen a lot among teenagers. Of course at the end Eric and Donna went over to her house and told her parents together and her father did not take it too well and say that he was going to go to his room. Eric mother did not take it too well either. She felt as if she had just lost her baby boy, so what she did was stay in bed all day and mourn to herself.
Parents, sometimes, do not tend to like the idea that their babies are all grown up and can take care of themselves. They have to lighten up and know that their children, although they are grown, will still need them no matter what and that it is not the end of the world just because their children wants to be a man or woman.

"Closure" and "Art"

The reading assignment for class today was “Closure” and “Art” by Scott McCloud. I was a bit surprise that the reading was a comic stripe. A very interesting reading, but I could not understand half of what the reading was about. I understood a little of the “Art” reading, but really have no clue what “Closure” was talking about. I believe art haves something to do with our imagination. What we do when we are bored and do not even realize it. Such art that we create out of boredom can be drawings, inventions, music and et cetera. Closure? The first thing that comes to be when I think of closure is the end of something or conclusion of something. I guess it has something to do with how everyone sees a completed things, object or action? How we put everything together into pieces at the end. Such as the conclusion of a movie, what we are going to do when we have to buy something and things of the such.
Apart from just doing the reading, I found the art or comic of the reading really distracting. I suppose it is probably the reason why I could not understand most of the reading. Pictures does say a lot of things to other but for others, I believe like myself, would probably understand the text more if it was written out for me instead of pictures. The cartoon was really friendly discussing closure and art, but it can be a big distraction.

HI EVERYONE!

This is a test run of my blog, since this is my very first time using one.

My name is Seng and I am a freshman at Wayne State University. As of the moment my major is still undecided, although I am interested in Pre-Social Works. What I am hoping to learn in Eng1020 is to become a better writer, write better constructive papers and to be able to read people and my surroundings better. Some of my hobbies consist of listening to music (at the moment I am currently obsessed with Kpop music) and writing short fan fiction (whenever possible). I listen to a variety of music; anything that catches my ear and is not considered rackets in my book. I love to get to know people and their background or culture. I currently have friends (penpals) almost all over the world. Most of my friends consider me as fun, helpful, kind, generous and a “DORK” once they get to know me. Define dork for me please anyone?

Well, I hope I will get to know everyone this semester. I will try my best to be helpful to everyone and hopefully everyone will do the same to me.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. ^____^
